Welcome to the Welsh Cardio-Thoracic Society

Why WCTS?

The Welsh Cardio-Thoracic Society (WCTS) was established in 2015 with the aim of working together to deliver excellent care to patients requiring Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery. WCTS as a key Clinical Reference Group will focus on outcomes, innovation, training the introduction of new services, strategic delivery of Cardio-Thoracic services and referral to treatment times.

WCTS meetings offer an excellent opportunity for all staff delivering Cardio-Thoracic services to interact with Health Board Executives, Commissioners and policymakers to take the service forward.

The WCTS has an annual meeting and all health professionals involved in Cardiothoracic Surgery from Wales, the United Kingdom and overseas are always welcome.

An important feature of our meeting is to ensure the participation of stakeholders, commissioners and planners of the speciality in Wales to focus on working together and help deliver the latest and best care to our patients. Patients are invited to attend our meeting and encouraged to get involved with the service as we evolve.

Our Meetings are held without a registration fee, and are covered through our sponsors.

Academic Cardio-Thoracic Surgery

Training programme

The two units in Wales provide a comprehensive training in adult Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. The program comprises of a six-year higher surgical training provided through the Wales Deanery.

The training program is led by the Programme Director, Pankaj Kumar.

Training Schedule

The Welsh Training Programme provides monthly teaching and training in Cardio-Thoracic surgery. This is overseen by the Training Program Director and arranged by Specialist Trainees in Cardio-Thoracic Surgery with the help of the Education and Clinical Supervisors from Morriston Hospital, Swansea and UHW, Cardiff.

Recent News

The first 3-D printed anatomical titanium chest wall prosthesis designed, 3-D printed and used for chest wall reconstruction at Morriston Hospital.

A 70-year-old male presented with an enlarging right chest wall chondrosarcoma involving the 2nd to the 4thribs anteriorly. This required a wide surgical resection and skeletal and soft tissue reconstruction. To reconstruct the large chest wall skeletal defect a 3-D printed titanium implant was custom designed as an anatomical fit and developed using 3-D digital technology at Morriston Hospital.

Our Members

What is WCTS?

The Executive Council of the WCTS is comprised of all Consultant Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons (current & retired) in Wales.

The two units that provide Cardio-Thoracic services in South Wales are Morriston Hospital, Swansea and the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. Both Units undertake adult Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery offering a wide range of specialized services with excellent outcomes (scts.org).

The Cardio-Thoracic service is supported by a range of facilities, appropriately trained clinical staff and has a strong academic and research profile. Both units provide teaching and training to undergraduate and postgraduate students of Swansea & Cardiff Universities.
