Pleural mesothelioma can be treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. There is insufficient evidence whether surgery helps patients with mesothelioma and whether surgery with chemotherapy is better than chemotherapy alone. Hence, the aim of the trial is to compare surgical extended pleurectomy decortication with no surgery. All patients will, however, receive chemotherapy. Along with other centres in the United Kingdom, UHW Cardiff has recently been approved as the surgical site for the MARS 2 Trail for mesothelioma.
